Estimating Wood Crating

 

ESTIMATING THE COST OF CUSTOM WOOD CRATES BY CUNNINGHAM GALLERY (based on material costs as of December, 2021 - prices subject to change - shipping not included)

 

STEP 1. ESTIMATING COST OF CRATE

Measure the item being shipped.

  • W = greatest width
  • L = greatest length
  • D = greatest depth

STEP 2. ESTIMATING COST OF CRATE

Add 6” to each dimension L, W, and D to obtain overall crate dimensions L’, W’ and D’. If the depth of the item being shipped is 2” or less, assume the crate depth D’ to be 4”. If the depth of the item being shipped is greater than 2”, calculate D’ (Example 2b). Round up all dimensions to the nearest whole number.
Example 2a: W’ = W + 6” = 24” + 6” =30” L’ = L + 6” = 34” + 6” = 40” In this example let’s say D=1”, so assume a crate depth D’=4” Example
2b: Assume W’ and L’ are the same as Example 2a (30” and 40”, respectively) D’ = D + 6” = 17.5” + 6” =23.5”, round up to 24”

 

STEP 3. ESTIMATING COST OF CRATE

Use the following formula to calculate the cost of your wood crate, Cost = [W’ x L’ x 0.25] + [(D’-4") x 12]
Example 3a. W’=30”, L’=40”, D’=4” (based on an item less 2” or less in depth) Cost = [30 x 40 x 0.25] + [(4-4) x 12] = 300 + 0 Cost of a 30”x40”x4” wood crate = $300.00 USD
Example 3b. W’=30”, L’=40”, D’=9” Cost = [30 x 40 x 0.25] + [(25-4) x 12] = 300 + 252 Cost of a 30”x40”x9” wood crate = $552.00 USD

 

STEP 4. ADDING ANY ADDITIONAL PACKING COSTS TO THE COST OF CRATE

There is no additional charge for packing a single item into a crate, the cost of ordinary packing materials to protect your item are factored into the pricing formula above. If additional items are being shipped in a single crate, please add 20% to the cost of the wood crate to account for additional packing materials and handling. Please consult with us to ensure that enough space is being allocated to safely pack all of the items being shipped together, the formula above is intended as a guide but is not absolute. We may adjust pricing as needed to accommodate unusually delicate items or complicated packing jobs. We work with a variety of shipping companies and can offer shipping estimates to suite your needs.
